Utah Trombone Authority [CD]

No doubt about it, the group’s name—Utah Trombone Authority—has a confident ring. And James Nova, Will Kimball, Mark Ammons, and Russell McKinney, blend skillfully and dynamically. Veteran engineer Jon Holloman captures the rich trombone harmonies with both warmth and clarity.

The program is exciting, with staples from the likes of Bach and Shostakovich, and playfully-conceived new works by local composers David Sargent and Murray Boren, both of whom enjoy national reputations. The program closes with a surprise. Local composer Steven Ricks has transcribed the Jimi Hendrix rock classic “Purple Haze” for unaccompanied trombone quartet. It sounds wonderful, and amazingly faithful to the original.
